Rough finish to a tough series in Chicago. The Yankees lost their series finale to the White Sox 2-to-1 in extra innings Thursday, their second straight extra-innings defeat — following Wednesday’s gut punch, a 6-to-5 loss in 12 innings on a walk-off single after a costly throwing error let the tying run score in the 11th. Cam Schlittler was outstanding in that one, allowing just one run into the seventh, but the bullpen couldn’t hold it. New York is now a league-worst 1-and-8 in extra-inning games this season.
Ryan Weathers started Thursday’s finale opposite Chicago’s Sean Burke, who’s been red-hot in July. The Yankees drop the series and now sit two-and-a-half games back of first-place Tampa Bay in the A-L East.
Next up: a three-game weekend set across town at Wrigley Field against the Cubs, starting Friday at two-twenty Eastern. Will Warren gets the ball for New York with Shota Imanaga on the hill for the Cubs.
