Monday’s six p-m deadline delivered one of the wildest trade days in years, and it all started with a true blockbuster over the weekend — two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal leaving Detroit for the two-time defending champion Dodgers. If Los Angeles was already the team to beat, this makes a third straight title feel almost inevitable.
Baltimore answered by waving the white flag, sending All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman to division-rival Boston for a haul of the Red Sox’s top prospects — a serious upgrade for a surging team, and the end of an era for the Orioles. Elsewhere, Luis Arraez, the National League’s reigning batting champ, joins the Phillies; Robbie Ray heads to the Padres; and the Cubs bolstered their rotation grabbing both Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes.
Bottom line: the contenders got greedy, the rebuilders sold out, and the National League playoff picture just got a whole lot more interesting.
Pirates’ fans on social media seem to be happy with trades that brought relief pitcher help with Camilo Doval from the Yankees and Luke Weaver from the Mets.
However, Yankee fans are blasting GM Brian Cashman for less than overwhelming trade deadline moves by not addressing glaring needs at catcher, third base or reliever.
