The Yankees avoided a sweep in dramatic fashion, but it took extra innings to do it. Toronto took the first two games of the weekend series — 3-to-1 Friday and 4-to-1 Saturday, riding a 13-and-19 stretch that’s been their calling card lately. But New York flipped the script Sunday, with Ben Rice hitting a two-run homer, his 33rd of the year, and then delivering the game-winner in the 10th inning for a 4-to-3 win. Closer David Bednar picked up the win after stranding the tying run at second, and Tim Hill locked down the save.
The Yankees improve to 69 and 55, still holding a Wild Card spot in a crowded American League. They now head to Baltimore for a three-game series starting Tuesday night at 6:35 EDT, with Will Warren on the mound for New York, and the Orioles’ sending Shane Baz to the hill.
