His fastball touched 98 miles an hour, easing concerns after a rough five-start stretch. The lone run came in the ninth, when Oneil Cruz took Padres closer Mason Miller deep — his first homer off Miller in over a year. San Diego’s Michael King matched Skenes pitch for pitch, striking out seven over seven scoreless innings himself.
The Pirates take the series, two games to none, with the finale Wednesday afternoon — Bubba Chandler on the mound for Pittsburgh.
