The Yankees dropped their weekend series in San Diego, two games to one. New York took Saturday’s game 5-to-1 behind Carlos Rodón’s five strong innings, but Friday and Sunday both went to the Padres. Sunday’s finale got away early — Fernando Tatis Junior, Jake Cronenworth, and Manny Machado hit home runs on three straight pitches to open the bottom of the first off Gerrit Cole, and San Diego held on for a 4-to-3 win. Cole settled in after that, finishing seven innings, but the damage was done. The Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth off the bullpen, but it wasn’t enough.
The Yankees improve to 81-and-62, still in firm control of the top American League Wild Card spot, and one win away from clinching their 34th straight winning season. New York now turns its attention to the Colorado Rockies.
