The Pirates rode a full bullpen effort to a 4-to-2 win over the White Sox Wednesday, using eight different pitchers to scatter eight hits and strike out 14 Chicago batters. Esmerlyn Valdez led off the fifth with a solo homer, his 17th of the year, and Konnor Griffin broke it open with a two-run single in the seventh. Brandon Eisert was outstanding against his former team, tossing two-and-a-third perfect innings with five strikeouts, and Mason Montgomery closed it out with a perfect ninth for his 11th save. Brandon Lowe extended his hitting streak with two more hits, his third straight multi-hit game — and things got heated in the process, with benches briefly clearing after a hard slide into second.
The win is Pittsburgh’s fifth straight series victory, and it pushes the Pirates back to the .500 mark for the first time since August 3rd as they stay alive in the N-L Wild Card race.
