Anthony Volpe waited all summer for a night like this one.
Recalled from Triple-A late Wednesday after Jazz Chisholm Junior went to the injured list with a sprained thumb, Volpe made his first big-league start at second base Thursday and went three-for-five with five R-B-I and a stolen base as the Yankees finished off a sweep of the Rockies, ten to three, in the Bronx. He singled home a run in the second, and then in the seventh, with the bases loaded, he lifted one into the short porch in right for a grand slam.
The Stadium chanted his name until he came out for a curtain call. Before the call-up, Volpe had been hitting three-eighty-eight with eight homers over his last thirteen games in Triple-A.
Luis Garcia Junior got it started with a two-run homer in the first, Spencer Jones had three hits including a two-run single, and Cody Bellinger doubled twice. Max Fried struck out seven but was chased in the fourth; John Schreiber picked up the win in relief. Aaron Judge had a scheduled day off.
New York has won sixteen of its last twenty-three. The Yankees are three games behind Tampa Bay in the East and four-and-a-half up on Boston for the top Wild Card, with sixteen to play. The Mets come to the Bronx tonight for the Subway Series.
