Buffalo’s season opened with a loss. The Sabres fell 6-3 in Columbus, and the story was a rough night in net.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen allowed all six goals on just 22 shots, stopping only 16 — a-.727 save percentage that won’t get it done against anyone. Columbus blew the game open with three goals in under six minutes late in the first period, and Matthew Knies lit up his new team with two goals and an assist. Buffalo got goals from Mattias Samuelsson, Konsta Helenius and Jack Quinn, with Noah Ostlund and Owen Power each picking up two assists — but the power play was the other story, going 0-for-5 while Columbus cashed in twice with the extra man. Luukkonen stayed in the net the whole way; he wasn’t pulled.
The Sabres now head home to Key Bank Center for Saturday’s home opener against the Chicago Blackhawks.
