It was a rough Saturday for Pennsylvania’s two biggest college football programs.
At Beaver Stadium, nineteenth-ranked USC beat Penn State thirty-one to twenty-three in the White Out. The Nittany Lions fall to three and three, and they’re oh-and-three in the Big Ten. Rocco Becht threw for two hundred eighty-nine yards, but after Penn State cut it to 24-23, USC pulled away, and a late fumble by Brett Eskildsen ended the comeback hopes. Penn State plays at Michigan Saturday at three-thirty.
In Pittsburgh, number twenty-five Pitt lost a heartbreaker to North Carolina, twenty-one to seventeen. The Panthers led in the fourth quarter, but Billy Edwards Junior hit Shamar Easter for a seventy-five-yard touchdown with eleven seconds left. Pitt outgained the Tar Heels, three hundred sixty-nine yards to two hundred sixty-nine, and La’Vell Wright ran for two touchdowns. But in his first college start, quarterback Holden Geriner threw two interceptions. Pitt is now five and one, and visits Boston College Saturday at noon.
