A Saturday split for the NHL teams we follow: the Sabres won, the Penguins fell just short. The Sabres go first.
Buffalo beat the Kings 3-2 in Los Angeles for its third straight win. Tage Thompson scored twice, including the go-ahead power-play goal with 6:20 left. Jack Quinn also scored, Zach Benson and Rasmus Dahlin each had two assists, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made twenty-seven saves. The power play went two for three. The Sabres are seven, four and three and have a point in seven straight road games. They host Ottawa Wednesday.
In Montreal, the Penguins lost to the Canadiens, 5-4. Pittsburgh trailed by two late, and Sidney Crosby scored with 3:11 left and the goalie pulled. Crosby and Erik Karlsson each had a goal and two assists, and Tommy Novak and Rickard Rakell also scored. Sergei Murashov stopped twenty-two shots. Crosby’s one thousand one hundred twelfth assist passed Ray Bourque for the most with one franchise in NHL history. Pittsburgh hosts Vegas Tuesday.
