SALAMANCA – Auditions are upcoming for the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association’s August production of the 1920’s razzle-dazzle-themed production of “Chicago.”
“Chicago” is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, with no signs of slowing down, and the CCLAA will bring the roaring 1920’s and pure entertainment here this summer. The show is based on a legendary book by Fred Ebb, with music by Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Ebb. “Chicago” is the winner of six 1997 Tony awards, including Best Musical Revval and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, “Chicago” is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer, who miraculously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to leave her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, similar to those seen in today’s tabloids.
The CCLAA’s production will be directed by Todd Wagner and choreographed by Rudi Andalora in the traditional Fosse-style. Auditions for “Chicago,” also known as “Broadway’s Most Electrifying Show” are set for 4 to 8 p.m. May 19, 6-9 p.m. May 20, and 6-7:30 p.m. May 21 at the Ray Evans Seneca Theatre, 10 Main St., Salamanca with callbacks to follow.
Those auditioning should prepare a song selection of 32 bars or less. An Accompanist will be provided.
Showdates are the weekends of Aug. 9 to 18 at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater.
