Congress is sending President Barack Obama legislation that aims to punish North Korea’s attempts at furthering its nuclear weapons program. House Republicans and Democrats joined together Friday and overwhelmingly agreed to slap Pyongyang with tougher sanctions. The vote came after North Korea launched a rocket carrying a satellite into space and conducted its fourth nuclear test with a total tally of 408 for and only 2 against. The legislation passed through the senate earlier this week. The goal of the legislation is to keep money out of Pyongyang’s hands that it needs for the development of miniaturized nuclear warheads and the long-range missiles needed to deliver them. The legislation authorizes $50 million to transmit radio broadcasts into North Korea and to purchase communications equipment and support humanitarian assistance programs.
