New York State residents 18 and older would be automatically registered as organ donors under a bill introduced in the State Assembly.
Buffalo Assemblyman Pat Burke’s bill would change the question on the state’s driver’s license application from asking people whether they want to be an organ donor to allowing them to opt-out of donation. Those who do not specifically opt-out would be automatically considered as donors.
Burke said that under his bill, more New Yorkers would become organ donors, but by being allowed to opt-out, would still have a choice in the matter.
