The founding father of the Pittsburgh Penguins has died. Peter Block died of cancer at age 82 at his home in Santa Monica, California. He was the team’s vice president and chief operating officer during its inaugural season in 1967-68. When Pittsburgh was named as one of 10 candidates for its NHL expansion from six to 12 cities that moved Block and former US Senator Jack McGregor to became partners. Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan says Block was a huge part of the history of the team and hockey in Pittsburgh.
