The Seneca Nation has announced their intention to bring buffalo back to the Southern Tier.
To mark Native American Heritage Month, the InterTribal Buffalo Council will be releasing wild buffalo onto a 300 acre plot on the Ohi:yo’ Sunfish Flats off of Route 17/I-86. The plot will be surrounded by an electric fence to keep the buffalo contained. It will be the first delivery of buffalo by the Council east of the Mississippi River.
It is unclear when the first buffalo will arrive in the area.
My guess is that by next summer’s end the buffalo will be extinct again in the southern tier. The formula is simple: 1 rifle + 1 pickup truck + 1 gallon of firewater + 2 individuals = 1 dead buffalo. I could be wrong, but I’ll stick to the prediction.
About time!!!! Seneca Pride
I wonder if they were able to get the wood bison for this project or had to settle for plains bison.
The twelve were Wind Cave bison. Since this story was published four have died from injuries experienced during transit and seven have joined the Nation’s existing herd.

What state, and county is that in? Or, a link to a map would help. I could do a search for the location, but why do authors of articles assume everyone knows what they’re talking about, when the whole world is on the internet? My ex is 1/4 Seneca, by the way.
We didn’t get specific because this is a local story to us. We didn’t expect to be getting traffic from the rest of the U.S.
For those coming from afar, the Ohi:yo’ Sunfish Flats are on the Seneca Allegany reservation, Cattaraugus County, New York.
