John Rooney, son of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Arthur J. Rooney Sr., has died.
The brother of former Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, and a minority shareholder in the team, was one of five children of Art, who founded the team in 1933.
John Rooney at one point had a 16% share of the Steelers, but sold most of it in 2009 as ownership coalesced around Dan Rooney and his son, current team president Art Rooney II.
As of 7:30 a.m. today, there was no announcement of John Rooney’s death on the Steelers website. His cause of death was not released.
His death came as the Steelers hosted a public viewing of Steelers legendary running back Franco Harris at Acrisure Stadium, where hundred of fans braved the cold to pay their respects to the Hall of Famer, who died last week. All members of the public were welcomed to view the closed-casket and the Harris family greeted every fan who came.
