UPDATED 3:38 PM 1/27
The American Legion Building in Eldred appears to have been destroyed in a fire.
The fire was reported at the Legion building shortly after 11 this morning, eventually going to four alarms. Early reports had stated the fire was at the VFW Hall, but those proved to be in error.
Route 446 was closed between the Dandy Mini-Mart and Derrick Road for about three and a half hours. It has since reopened.
Bradford City Firefighters Tower #1 were among companies from two counties that responded to the scene, calling in all off-duty personnel to serve on stand-by for any other incidents.
Before a permanent water source could be established closer to the building, a nearby neighbor volunteered to let firefighters use his pond to fill their tankers.
No word yet on the cause of the fire, any injuries, or damage estimates, although sources on the scene have referred to the building as a “total loss.”
