Agencies are reporting continued scam calls to area residents, hoping to prey on fear to get money or personal information.
The U.S. Border Patrol station in Buffalo reported that area residents are receiving calls from scammers pretending to be federal agents claiming the potential victim is to be deported or in other trouble. Those calls often “spoof” official phone numbers and can appear to be from federal agents and require the victim to provide personal information to “clear up the confusion.”
Neither the Department of Homeland Security or CBP solicit money over the phone, nor do either perform enforcement action telephonically. If such calls are received, people should make a note of the number, any pertinent details about the call/caller, and immediately hang up.
