The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service will open all-terrain vehicle and off-highway motorcycle (ATV/OHM) trails at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23 in the Allegheny National Forest. The summer riding season runs through Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Annual permits are required to operate ATVs, UTVs, and OHMs on the 109-mile, motorized trail system. Information on how to secure a permit can be found on the forest website.
Forest Service staff have assessed trail conditions prior to opening and determined a detour is necessary for a small section of the Timberline ATV A Loop due to unsafe trail conditions. Please see map for detour location and alternative route. Trail conditions can be challenging, and users are encouraged to consider their skill level when evaluating whether to use any trail.
To help protect the natural and cultural resources of the Forest we encourage visitors to practice outdoor ethics such as Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly principles. Trail users should always proceed with caution, as many trails are open for multiple uses. Users may encounter vehicles, bicyclists, horseback riders, or hikers at any time. Riders are responsible for the safety of themselves and those around them.
Please visit the forest website to explore all the outdoor recreation opportunities that Allegheny National Forest offers.
