St. Bonaventure’s men’s basketball team knocked off La Salle 99 to 80 today in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh — and it wasn’t close.
This one had extra meaning. Head coach Mark Schmidt, who has guided this program for 19 years, announced his retirement at the end of this season. His Bonnies gave him something to smile about — a dominant performance that erased the memory of a 78-74 loss to these same Explorers back in January.
Frank Mitchell — the nation’s leader in offensive rebounds and one of the most productive big men in the country — and sharpshooting guard Buddy Simmons II powered the Bona offense in what turned into a wire-to-wire statement win.
Now, St. Bonaventure turns its attention to No. 5 seed George Mason in the second round on Thursday, at 2:00pm EDT. The Patriots already beat the Bonnies earlier this season, so you know Bona will be locked in and hungry for revenge.
