It went from bad to worse for the Pittsburgh Penguins Monday night.
Philadelphia shut out Pittsburgh three-to-nothing at PPG Paints Arena, taking a commanding two-games-to-none series lead in the Battle of Pennsylvania. Dan Vladar was a brick wall in net for the Flyers — the Penguins peppered him with 27 shots and couldn’t beat him once. Porter Martone opened the scoring with his second goal of the series, Garnet Hathaway added a shorthanded goal to make it two-nothing , and Luke Glendening put it away with an empty-netter. Pittsburgh was zero-for-five on the power play over the two games. The crowd at PPG was booing.
Historically, the numbers are brutal for the Penguins right now. In NHL playoff history, teams that win both Games 1 and 2 go on to win the series 87 percent of the time — leaving Pittsburgh with just a 13 percent chance of pulling this off.
The series now shifts to Philadelphia — Game 3 is Wednesday night at seven o’clock at Xfinity Mobile Arena on TNT. Pittsburgh desperately needs a win to stay alive.
