A rough weekend at PNC Park for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Philadelphia swept the three-game series — winning Friday night eleven-to-nine in a slugfest, then shutting Pittsburgh out back-to-back — six-nothing Saturday and six-nothing again Sunday. Zack Wheeler was untouchable in the finale, striking out eight in seven shutout innings while the Bucs managed just five hits.
But the bigger concern coming out of the weekend is Ryan O’Hearn. The first baseman and outfielder collided with Phillies batter Bryson Stott while making a play on a pop-up Saturday and had to leave the game. An MRI confirmed a right quad strain, and the Pirates placed him on the ten-day injured list Sunday — though GM Ben Cherington made clear it’s not going to be a ten-day situation. O’Hearn was hitting two-eight-nine with seven home runs and twenty-nine RBIs on the year — a huge loss for this lineup.
Pittsburgh hits the road Tuesday to open a three-game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals.
