The Pittsburgh Pirates salvaged the series finale in Toronto on Sunday, taking the rubber game 4-1 over the Blue Jays.
Mitch Keller was the story on the mound — going six strong innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out five to pick up the win. Gregory Soto closed it out for the save. Dylan Cease took the loss for Toronto, surrendering two home runs in four and two-thirds innings.
The long ball carried Pittsburgh offensively. Esmerlyn Valdez went deep for two R-B-I’s, Oneil Cruz added a solo shot, and Spencer Horwitz hit one out as well. Three home runs on six total hits was more than enough to get the job done.
Pittsburgh splits the six-game road trip at three and three and comes home to PNC Park for a Memorial Day matinee today against the Chicago Cubs. Carmen Mlodzinski takes the ball for Pittsburgh against Chicago’s Ben Brown, with first pitch set for one-thirty-five Eastern. Mlodzinski is four and three with a 3.96 E-R-A. Brown comes in at one and two but carries a sharp 2.09 E-R-A.
