Down six-to-one heading into the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers — the Pittsburgh Pirates did something nobody saw coming.
Pittsburgh erupted for eight unanswered runs over the final three innings — capping off a stunning 9-8 comeback victory at PNC Park Wednesday night. And the man who lit the fuse was Tyler Callihan.
The young outfielder was absolutely electric — going two-for-four with two home runs and four RBIs, scoring three times, and drawing two walks. Both homers came in the critical seventh and eighth inning rallies that completely flipped the game on its head.
Pittsburgh scored three in the seventh and five more in the eighth to take the lead for good. Brandon Lowe added a two-RBI double, Spencer Horwitz homered and drove in two, and Jake Mangum went three-for-four.
Shohei Ohtani pitched six-and-two-thirds innings for Los Angeles — striking out six — and Ryan Ward hit a grand slam. But the Dodgers bullpen couldn’t hold it — Kyle Hurt was charged with four runs without recording an out in the eighth.
Evan Sisk earned the win and Gregory Soto nailed down the save despite a shaky ninth.
The rubber match is tonight at PNC Park — first pitch at 6:40pm EDT.
