Gerrit Cole couldn’t find his rhythm Monday night in Detroit, and the Yankees paid for it.
New York fell 5-3 to the Tigers as Cole was knocked out after just four-and-a-third innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs, including a home run to Riley Greene. It’s easily been his roughest start of the season. Framber Valdez was excellent on the other side — six innings, one run, eight strikeouts — to pick up the win for Detroit.
The Yankees did try to claw back. Amed Rosario hit a two-run homer, and Anthony Volpe and Paul Goldschmidt each had two hits, but New York went just one for five with runners in scoring position and couldn’t complete the comeback.
It’s a second straight series where the offense has gone quiet at the wrong moments.
New York looks to bounce back tomorrow night in Detroit, first pitch 6:40pm EDT
