The New York Yankees just can’t buy a win — and now they can’t buy a healthy roster either.
Detroit swept the Bronx Bombers in three straight at Yankee Stadium, capping the series Wednesday afternoon with a 6-2 extra-innings gut punch that stretched to eleven innings. New York has now lost seven straight and ten of its last twelve games. It is an absolute disaster in the Bronx.
Will Warren pitched 5.3 innings and gave the Yankees a chance to win — but the offense was lifeless all afternoon, not recording its third hit until the eighth inning. The Yankees rallied in the ninth on a Jazz Chisholm stolen base dash and an Amed Rosario pinch-hit blast to tie it — only to have the bullpen blow it wide open in the top of the eleventh, with Camilo Doval serving up four runs and a walking parade.
And the injury report just keeps getting longer. Aaron Judge is still out with a stress fracture in his right rib and won’t be re-evaluated until around the All-Star break. Giancarlo Stanton — no timetable. And now Jazz Chisholm is in concussion protocol after taking an elbow to the face from teammate Jasson Dominguez on a poorly communicated popup.
New York opens a three-game home series against Minnesota this Friday, with Gerrit Cole — 2-3 with a 4.06 E-R-A — on the mound.
