It’s been a mixed week for American players at Wimbledon, but Coco Gauff is carrying the flag.
The twenty-one-year-old seventh seed reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in her career Tuesday, battling back from a set down to beat fellow American Jessica Pegula four-six, six-three, six-three in an all-American quarterfinal on Centre Court. It’s the second straight match Gauff has won after dropping the first set — a sign of real championship grit on the grass.
She’ll face either Marta Kostyuk or Jasmine Paolini in the semis. Gauff has a legitimate shot at her first Wimbledon title — and she’s playing her best grass tennis ever.
On the men’s side, Taylor Fritz is the last American standing — and today he faces the biggest test of his tournament. The sixth seed takes on second seed Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Fritz has reached the semis here before and is three wins away from becoming the first American man to win Wimbledon since Pete Sampras in 2000.
Madison Keys fell in the round of sixteen to Linda Noskova, and Pegula’s run ended Tuesday.
Gauff versus the field. Fritz versus Zverev. It’s a big day for American tennis.
