Pirates starter Jared Jones actually pitched well in the loss — he retired the first nine batters he faced before Corbin Carroll’s leadoff double sparked Arizona’s fourth-inning rally. Jones finished with five strikeouts over six innings, allowing just three earned runs on four hits.
The bigger picture stings more than the box score: Arizona took two of three in the series and won the season series over Pittsburgh, securing the tiebreaker — a potentially crucial edge with both teams fighting for that final N-L Wild Card spot. The Pirates have now dropped four of their last six at home.
