The Pirates kept rolling against the Brewers Monday night, beating the NL Central leaders 4-to-3 in Milwaukee. Spencer Horwitz drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double, and Bubba Chandler picked up his first win since June 25th. But the story was the bullpen — newly acquired closer Camilo Doval tossed a perfect eighth, and Mason Montgomery locked down his third save in five chances. Pittsburgh has now beaten Milwaukee six times in seven meetings this season.
That bullpen boost is no accident. The Pirates went all-in at Monday’s trade deadline, first grabbing Doval from the Yankees over the weekend, then landing veteran closer Luke Weaver from the Mets — sending shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura to New York. Weaver carries a sparkling 1.84 E-R-A. It’s an aggressive, uncharacteristic spending push from Pittsburgh as they chase their first playoff berth in a decade.
