Yankee Bullpen Blows it in Loss to Cards

The Yankees’ trade deadline hangover hit hard last night. St. Louis torched New York 13-to-7 at Yankee Stadium, with Cardinals outfielder Alec Burleson going deep three times, including a 424-foot bomb into the second deck. Cy Young candidate Cam Schlittler didn’t survive past a few innings, and the bullpen only made it worse — Angel Chivilli and Ryan Yarbrough combined to let the Cardinals put up seven runs in the eighth inning alone, turning a competitive game into a laugher.

It’s the exact problem the Yankees needed to fix by Monday’s six p-m deadline, and didn’t. New York landed Luis García Junior from the Nationals for four pitching prospects — a fine bat, but general manager Brian Cashman left the trade deadline without adding a single reliever or a catcher, needs that have dogged this roster for weeks. Last night was Exhibit A of why that decision could haunt them.
