The Yankees couldn’t complete the sweep, falling 1-to-nothing to the Mariners Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Max Fried was solid but not sharp — five innings, five hits, one run, four strikeouts, but he battled his command all day, throwing 88 pitches with just 55 for strikes. The lone run came on a Weston Wilson solo homer in the second.
Mariners starter Logan Gilbert was even better, tossing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, and Seattle’s bullpen closed it out for their first 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium since 2012. It’s just the Mariners’ sixth win in their last 21 games. The Yankees now head to Toronto to open a series Friday, with Gerrit Cole on the mound.
