The Pirates got back in the win column this weekend, taking two of three from the Boston Red Sox at PNC Park. Pittsburgh opened with an 8-to-4 win Friday behind Brandon Lowe’s three-run homer, but Boston answered Saturday, with Sonny Gray tossing seven scoreless innings in a 4-to-nothing shutout. The Pirates responded in a big way Sunday, scoring five runs in the third inning alone and cruising to an 8-to-3 win — Bryan Reynolds, Brandon Lowe, and Nick Yorke each drove in two runs. It’s Pittsburgh’s franchise-best eighth straight home series win against an American League opponent.
The Pirates stay home to host the Detroit Tigers next, with the series opening tonight at 7:05 Eastern at PNC Park. Carmen Mlodzinski gets the start for Pittsburgh with Framber Valdez taking the ball for the Tigers.
