The St. Bonaventure men’s team came up just short in a tough road test Monday night, falling 1-to-nothing at nationally-ranked West Virginia. The Mountaineers, ranked 23rd in the country and picked to win the Sun Belt in their preseason coaches’ poll, outshot the Bonnies 17-to-2, with WVU-Tech transfer Julen Recalde scoring the game’s only goal in the 62nd minute off a cross from Aurelien Cormier. Goalkeeper duties for St. Bonaventure kept the deficit manageable despite the shot disparity. The Bonnies fall to 1-and-1 on the young season after opening with a 2-nothing win at Niagara behind goals from Jack Steel and leading returning scorer Kyle Macfarlane. St. Bonaventure returns home Sunday, August 30th, to host Le Moyne.
On the women’s side, new head coach Ray Leone’s squad is also 1-and-1 early on. Leone picked up his 310th career Division I coaching win in his Bonaventure debut, a 1-nothing win over Saint Peter’s on a goal from sophomore transfer Ava Reybitz. That was followed by a hard-fought 3-2 loss at Cornell, with the Bonnies mounting a late rally that fell just short. St. Bonaventure hosts Le Moyne this Thursday at 6 p-m at the Marra Athletics Complex.
