The Pirates’ bid for a series sweep in San Diego fell short Wednesday, as the Padres salvaged the finale with a 3-0 win at Petco Park. Bubba Chandler took the loss, allowing two runs — one earned — on four hits over five-and-two-thirds innings. San Diego’s offense, which had gone cold the previous two games, came alive just enough: a Jackson Merrill double and Yendry Rengifo RBI single opened the scoring, and Manny Machado came around to score on a Merrill triple in the fourth after reaching on a Nick Gonzales throwing error.
Still, the Pirates took two of three in San Diego and improve to 65-and-70 on the season. Pittsburgh continues its road trip next in St. Louis for a weekend series with the Cardinals.
