The Pirates capped off a nine-game road trip in style, taking the series from St. Louis two games to one. Pittsburgh dropped the opener 4-to-1 Friday, but bounced back in a big way — a 6-to-2 win Saturday behind a bullpen game that held the Cardinals to just three hits, followed by a 5-to-4 rubber-match win Sunday at Busch Stadium. Esmerlyn Valdez homered early to give Pittsburgh the lead, and Jared Triolo added a solo shot in the fifth as the Pirates found their power stroke again after a quiet stretch on the road trip.
The Pirates finish the trip with back-to-back series wins, also taking two of three from San Diego, and improve to 67-and-71 on the season.
