Jared Jones took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Thursday night, losing it with two outs when Colson Montgomery doubled off the right-field wall — a ball that was a couple of feet from tying the game. Jones finished with one hit allowed, eight strikeouts and two walks over seven innings on ninety pitches, and Pittsburgh shut out the White Sox 2-0 to complete a three-game sweep.
Oneil Cruz supplied the offense. In the fifth, he hit a four-thirty-three-foot homer off Erick Fedde that left the bat at one-seventeen-point-four miles an hour — the hardest-hit home run in the majors this season. He added an R-B-I single in the eighth for the insurance run, finishing three-for-four. Mason Montgomery worked the ninth for his twelfth save and stretched his scoreless streak to nineteen and a third innings.
The Pirates outscored Chicago fifteen to five in the series, winning nine to three Tuesday behind a five-run first inning and Bubba Chandler, and four to two Wednesday. It’s their first road sweep of an American League club since July of twenty twenty-four, and their fifth straight series win. At seventy-four and seventy-three, Pittsburgh is over five hundred and five games back of the final National League Wild Card spot.
They open a series at Wrigley Field this afternoon at two-twenty against the Cubs and Shota Imanaga.
