The Yankees pulled off a wild comeback, beating the Rays 6 to 4 at Yankee Stadium — down 4-1 in the sixth, New York rallied behind a Paul Goldschmidt two-run single to tie it and a George Lombard Junior go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth. Austin Wells also went deep.
Down in Pittsburgh, the Pirates edged the Cardinals 2 to 1 behind Paul Skenes’ final start of the year — six-and-a-third innings, one run, eight strikeouts. Spencer Horwitz drove in the winning run on a sac fly in the eighth. That’s Pittsburgh’s 81st win, their first non-losing season since 2018.
On the ice, tougher nights for both Buffalo and Pittsburgh. The Sabres fell to the Red Wings 3-2 in overtime — Jiri Kulich and Trevor Kuntar scored for Buffalo, but Alex DeBrincat won it on the power play just 33 seconds into the extra frame. And the Penguins were blanked by the Blue Jackets, 4 to nothing, as Columbus newcomer Valeri Nichushkin scored in his Blue Jackets debut.
