
Two winning Saturday nights for the region’s NHL teams. First, Buffalo.
The Sabres beat Chicago four to three in the home opener at KeyBank Center. Jiri Kulich, back after missing seventy games with a blood clot, scored the winner with six-forty left, off a pass from Owen Power. Rasmus Dahlin tied it earlier in the third period, and Tage Thompson and Jack Quinn also scored. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made twelve saves, and Buffalo has now beaten Chicago seven straight times. The Sabres host Minnesota Tuesday night.
In Pittsburgh, the Penguins beat Montreal six to five in overtime. Pittsburgh led five to one in the second period, but Montreal scored four straight, including goals by Chris Kreider and Ivan Demidov in the final two minutes, to force overtime. Tommy Novak ended it at one thirty-three of overtime on a pass from Evgeni Malkin, his second goal of the night. Malkin also scored, passing Dale Hawerchuk for twenty-second on the NHL’s all-time points list. Arturs Silovs made twenty saves. The Penguins are two and oh and host Winnipeg tonight, October 5.
