A tough night for the Pittsburgh Penguins in Washington. Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists as the Capitals beat Pittsburgh five to three Wednesday in Alex Ovechkin’s final home opener.
Anthony Beauvillier scored twenty-three seconds in, and Bryan Rust tied it on his first shift of the season. But a Kris Letang turnover led to Wilson’s goal, and Washington went up four to one in the second. Pittsburgh got within one, but Ryan Leonard’s power-play goal in the third sealed it.
The Penguins outshot Washington thirty to twenty-seven, but Logan Thompson made twenty-seven saves. Sidney Crosby was on the ice for every Washington even-strength goal and finished minus-four.
Ben Kindel, who scored in each of his first two games, assisted on Rust’s goal.
Pittsburgh is two and two. The Penguins play Friday at Columbus, seven Eastern.
