The New York Yankees’ season is over. The Tampa Bay Rays beat New York four to three Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium to sweep the American League Division Series, three games to none.
The game was tied two-two in the sixth when Victor Mesa Junior homered off Max Fried to put the Rays ahead. In the bottom half, a fan reached over the wall on Anthony Volpe’s drive to left, and replay turned a game-tying homer into a run-scoring double. The Yankees never tied it.
Tampa Bay outscored New York ten to five in the series. The Yankees managed one hit in Game One and played without Aaron Judge, sidelined by a calf injury. The sweep stretches their title drought to seventeen years.
The Rays open the American League Championship Series Monday at Tropicana Field, their first since 2020. They will face either the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Guardians.
