While there is still a little more than a month to go before New York’s Disposable Plastic Shopping Bag ban goes into effect, one area supermarket is getting a head start.
Wegmans’ stores announced that starting today, they would no longer use disposable plastic bags in any of its stores. Customers will be encouraged to purchase or bring reusable bags with them.
Paper shopping bags will be available at Wegmans for five cents each. Where localities have enacted a tax on paper bags, the five cents will pay that tax. Everywhere else, it will be donated to local food banks.
