An effort to change the name of Jamestown High School’s mascot has drawn the attention of the Seneca Nation of Indians.
President Rickey L. Armstrong Sr., released a written response to an online petition earlier this week seeking to change the school’s longtime “Red Raiders” nickname.
“Seneca and Native American culture are reflected in the names of countless streets, towns and locations throughout Western New York,” Armstrong said. “Unfortunately, we also see the continued use of names and imagery, particularly in athletics programs, that degrade, mock, and offend Native traditions, Native culture, and Native people. The time for change has long since arrived, and the call should be heeded.”
The online petition has picked up nearly 400 signatures since being circulated on social media.
School officials say they are aware of the movement, but that they have not been directly contacted by the organizers.
