CARE for Children and volunteers from the Safe Kids Pennsylvania- McKean County partnered up to fit helmets at Port Allegany Elementary School.
The 2025 Kindergarten Bicycle Safety Program provided over 400 free bicycle helmets and bike safety education to Kindergarten students across McKean County and in Coudersport.
Grant funding for the program was provided by the PA Department of Health Preventative Health and Health Services Block Grant through Safe Kids Pennsylvania, the Port Allegany and Smethport Campaigns for United Way and the Kane United Fund.

An Ellicottville man sentenced for a multi-state police chase appeared virtually in McKean County Court Thursday requesting to change council.
64-year-old Patrick Fuhr was convicted for felony Receiving Stolen Property, felony Fleeing Police, Resisting Arrest with use of a Deadly Weapon; 6 counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person with a Deadly Weapon and numerous traffic citations and sentenced to 6 to 12 years in state prison.
Judge Pavlock granted Fuhr’s request to change council as long as his current attorney finds out if he wants to appeal, and if he does, to file the appeal before leaving as counsel.
5PM THURSDAY
A Mt Jewett man had a revocation hearing in McKean County Court Thursday.
At the hearing, 50-year-old Brad Mix for his attorney to be removed from his case, which they agreed to.
Mix also didn’t dispute the facts that he had failed to pass multiple probationary drug screens, which led to his parole being revoked in the first place, and he was remanded to McKean County jail to serve the remainder of his sentence.

A Mount Jewett man was sentenced for failing to register as a sexual offender Thursday.
James McMichael was sentenced to 6 to 23.5 months in prison, 3 years consecutive probation and to pay a 250 dollar lab fee.
McMichael’s age, health, and the circumstances of the case were mitigating factors in the sentencing.
5PM THURSDAY
A Smethport man spontaneously rejected his guilty plea at his scheduled sentencing Thursday.
64-year-old Daniel Walter Merrick previously pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child porn, one count of 499 images and videos, and another of 199 images and videos.
Judge Pavlock stopped Merrick’s statement when it seemed that he was arguing that he was in fact innocent of the charges and had merely acquired the hundreds of images of child porn as part of a personal investigation into human trafficking.
After consulting with his attorney, Merrick chose to withdraw his guilty plea and the case will now be listed for trial.
3PM THURSDAY
A Bradford man was charged today for a violation of a protection from abuse order.
City of Bradford Police charged 31-year-old Craig R. Whitmer with criminal contempt.
The charges stem from an alleged trespassing incident reported on Sunday night.
Through witness statements and video surveillance, officers determined that a physical altercation had occurred between Whitmer and a woman, resulting in his violation of the PFA.
Whitmer was remanded to McKean County Jail without bail, pending arraignment on additional protection order violations.
NOON THURSDAY
A Buffalo man faces several felony drug charges following a traffic stop in Olean on Friday.
Olean Police arrested 54-year-old James Young on a warrant issued out of Cattaraugus County Court related to charges of felony possession of a narcotic drug and felony sale of a controlled substance.
The warrant stems from Young allegedly selling crack to an undercover agent of the Street Crimes unit.
Young failed to stop immediately during a traffic stop on I-86 and was allegedly seen throwing 10 baggies of crack cocaine out of his car.
Young was additionally charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, felony evidence tampering and various traffic infractions.
Young was turned over to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.
NOON THURSDAY
An Olean man was charged with several felonies in Hinsdale on Tuesday.
New York State Police charged 37-year-old Justin W. Lippert with a felony aggravated family offense, two felony counts of criminal contempt and reckless endangerment.
Lippert was released on his own recognizance.

The City of Bradford Police made a Facebook post stating the rear of the Poplin Avenue parking lot to Callahan Park will be closed until the completion of Phase II of the Callahan Park Renovation Project.
The post says that police “appreciate your patience and understanding as these improvements are made to enhance the park for our community.”
Please plan accordingly and use different parking areas at this time.
NOON THURSDAY
An Erie man was charged with multiple drug felonies after a traffic stop in Amity, NY Tuesday night.
New York State Police charged 46-year-old Gary Naland Wiley with felony possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving, unlawful fleeing a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance.
Wiley was held pending arraignment.
NOON THURSDAY
Firefighter-EMT Mike McConnell was promoted to full time in the Bradford Volunteer Fire Department at this week’s city council meeting.
According to a post on the Bradford City Firefighters Facebook page, “Mike has worked part time with the City of Bradford Fire Department for the past four years. He has been in emergency services for twelve years and currently serves as the fire chief of the Rew Volunteer Fire Department… Mike is well trained and experienced. He is a proven asset to the department.”
