Lakeside towns and villages will begin applying herbicides to Chautauqua Lake today in an effort to cut down on weed overgrowth. The towns of Ellicott, Ellery, and North Harmony and the villages of Lakewood and Celeron all received permits from the New York State DEC to use Aquathol and Navigate to control Eurasian watermilfoil and curlyleaf pondweed in the lake. There are restrictions on water use during and after application and signs will be posted around the lake, at public access points, and downstream to warn people.
