UFC superstar Conor McGregor announced his unexpected retirement from mixed martial arts in a post on social media early Tuesday morning.
The announcement came just hours after the 30 year old fighter made a pre-recorded appearance on “The Tonight Show” saying that he and the UFC were negotiating a potential return to the Octagon in July.
Despite having announced retirement once in 2016 and quickly changing his mind, UFC president Dana White told ESPN that McGregor’s retirement makes sense and he believes the announcement is legitimate.
McGregor has a record of 21-4 in the sport as well as his 1 professional boxing loss against Floyd Mayweather. His last win was in 2016 over Eddie Alvarez when he became the first UFC fighter to simultaneously hold championship belts in two divisions.
