The Tri-County Arts Council is pleased to announce the exhibit opening for Sanctuary, works by Stephanie Zwyghuizen, at the Arts Council’s Art on Main Gallery, 100 W. Main Street in Allegany, on Friday evening, September 7th from 6-8 p.m. Appetizers and beverages are served at the opening reception which is free and open to the public. The public is invited to come view these works on exhibit through October 19, 2018.
Stephanie Zwyghuizen is a professor of mathematics at Jamestown Community College, a naturalist, a photographer, and, most recently, a printmaker. Zwyghuizen finds the logic, planning, problem-solving process, and attention to detail of reduction printing to be a natural fit for her mathematical skills. As she explains, “it is exciting to have an image in my mind and then watch it slowly unfold layer after layer.”
Inspirationfor several pieces in this exhibition came from Zwyghuizen’s recent tour of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY. She was deeply moved by the Byzantine-style iconography throughout the sanctuary and it prompted her to reflect on the places in which she feels a similar emotional connection. She describes nature as her sanctuary, “somewhere to experience physical, emotional, and spiritual renewal. My artwork attempts to capture those feelings and to share the experience with others. Even my more whimsical pieces still feature elements from the natural world, these depictions becoming the icons of my sanctuary.”
The Art on Main Gallery is open Monday through Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Thursdays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The gallery is closed on weekends.
