The man charged with driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a Mount Jewett firefighter has waived his preliminary hearing.
41-year-old Bharat Gaikwad of Bradford is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle and nine related offenses in connection to the September 4 crash that killed Mike Mix.
The crash happened on Route 219 near Kennedy Springs when Gaikwad’s car crossed the center line and hit Mix’s vehicle head-on. Police say after the crash they found two empty bottles of vodka and an empty beer can in Gaikwad’s car.
Mix was a former chief of the Mount Jewett fire department and was president of the department at the time of his death.
Gaikwad remains in McKean County Jail on $100,000 bail.
