The Olean Zoning Board of Appeals tabled discussion on a new homeless shelter for two weeks at its meeting last night.
The Board was considering a religious exemption to the City’s zoning laws to turn the former convent building adjacent to St. John’s Roman Catholic Church into a new home for the Genesis House women and families shelter, which is currently located on Barry Street near Lincoln Park.
In a letter sent in May, City Attorney Nick DiCerbo recommended either denying the exemption or gathering more information, saying that at that time the church had not shown that the shelter would fit in with the church’s mission.
