A 16-year-old Franklinville girl shot a non-native red deer while hunting late last month.
The NY Department of Environmental Conservation says the 175-pound doe was living in the wild, but they haven’t been able to determine where it came from.
They say all facilities in the area that have red deer in captivity were contacted, and their deer are all accounted for.
Red deer are native to Europe and Asia, and were introduced to the United States in the 1930s. They can be held in captivity, but DEC says a loose red deer is a problem because it could spread disease to the native whitetail herd.
