Wednesday’s fire at the iconic AJ’s Bar in Olean had people thinking about other fires that destroyed beloved Olean-area businesses.
Among them, Paul’s Steakhouse that burned 41 years ago this month.
The restaurant known for its exquisite dining was also known for the fiberglass steer on the roof of the building. The steer, which came from Venice, California, was 17-feet high from hoof to horns.
In 1981, tearful St. Bonaventure students made their to North Union Street to say goodbye to Louie Marra’s Downtown Deli and Rack ‘n’ Rib Room, as it was being destroyed by fire.
Paul’s Steakhouse is one of the businesses being considered for this year’s Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Santa Claus Lane ornament. Another is the Cloud 9 amusement park. You can see pictures of both at wesb.com, as well as information on how to suggest an ornament idea to the chamber.
And if Cloud 9 makes you remember Fentier Village, you can find pictures of that where we found (and got permission to use) the pictures of Cloud 9 and Paul’s Steak House:
